Safety Zone Video The Florida Department of Transportation is set to begin work on a roadway designed to relieve some of the congestion on U.S. 301 in Starke.

Construction on the U.S. 301 truck route around Starke is set to begin this summer at an estimated cost of $90 million. The 7.3-mile long, four-lane truck route on the west side of Starke will be constructed between County Road 227 and County Road 233.

The new roadway will consist of two travel lanes in each direction, and overpasses will be constructed over County Road 100A, the CSX Railroad, and County Road 229. Interchanges will be constructed along the new roadway to provide access to State Road 100 and State Road 16.

The new roadway will provide an alternate route for freight-carrying trucks, and will help alleviate some of the traffic congestion on U.S. 301 through downtown Starke.

In addition to relieving congestion on the busy U.S. 301 corridor, it is expected to provide additional capacity for future traffic growth. The new route is projected to carry more than 25,000 vehicles per day by 2020, and increase to more than 31,000 per day by 2040.

The project will be completed in phases and construction of the alternate truck route should be completed sometime in late 2019.
